Started cutting up pieces of aluminium today, which will ultimately form the galvo frame. We learned that:
- Aluminium is not as soft as everyone tells me it is. Obviously it’s soft in comparison to some things, but it still required a surprising degree of elbow-grease with the hacksaw and file.
- This is actually possible. I had reservations about my abilities to successfully manufacture such small parts without the assistance of CNC milling, but was able to make pieces of metal that were both the correct size and consistent (as measured by the .1mm per division callipers).
- That attempting to drill precision holes with a cordless drill ain’t going to work. I can make holes alright, but they tend not to go in a straight line, which they really, really need to. Need to find me a pillar drill.
